Welcome Back to School!

It’s been an especially busy summer this year as we continue our work to visually transform the campuses from St. Francis School to our inaugural year as Francis Parker School of Louisville. Across both campuses, new signs have been installed, new athletic uniforms are ordered, new spirit wear has been designed, and countless other changes have been made to showcase the new Francis Parker name and brand. We’ve also been busy recruiting talented new teachers and staff members, and we are thrilled to introduce each of them to you!  Preschool Laura Wilmes is joining us as our new Preschool 4s Teacher and will be partnering with Paul Harshaw. Laura is coming to us all the way from Singapore where she and her family have been living and working since 2006. Throughout their time in Singapore, Laura has spent the majority of that time at the Canadian International School as a Senior Kindergarten teacher, a Junior Kindergarten teacher, and most recently as a Preschool teacher. She holds a B.S. in Child Development and Family Relations from Western Carolina University and an M.A. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Kentucky.  Lower School In Lower School, Katie Jordan will be joining the team as our new Lower School Math Teacher. Derby Day at St. Francis School!

On Wednesday we celebrated the return of the Run for the Roses in Goshen! We were thrilled to welcome grandparents back on campus for our Preschool Grandparents' Day Derby Race and Tea in the morning. Our youngest jockeys paraded around the front of the School before racing their handmade horses and filling little bellies with cookies and lemonade! Our 1st and 2nd graders kicked off our afternoon festivities by parading on bikes, scooters, and even a few hoverboards before the Junior Kindergarten Pegasus Parade, six adorable Kindergarten Derby races, and the infamous 8th Grade Victory Lap. Grandparents, parents, teachers, and students delighted in once again being spectators at the fastest 15 minutes in racing history. Though it was chilly and the track was wet, this did not stop our enthusiastic jockeys from keeping their eyes on the prize. Congratulations to all of our preschoolers and kindergarten students on an exciting day at the track! We hope everyone has a wonderful Derby weekend! You can enjoy more Preschool Derby photos here and Kindergarten Derby photos here.

“Sister Act JR.” Wows Audiences!

Hallelujah! Bravo to the cast, crew, and production team of Sister Act JR. who "raised their voices" and wowed four large crowds with dynamic performances of singing and dancing nuns, shady gangsters, and plenty of comedy and drama. There was even an appearance by the "Pope!" Live musicals are back and Sister Act JR. was a show that won't soon be forgotten by all who attended.

Progressive Education the Wyvern Way: Lower School

This is the fourth article in a four-part series on Progressive education at St. Francis School. By Jennifer Griffith, Lower School Director One day in March, kindergartner Lily Armour brought her favorite book to school. Lily was very excited to share the book with classmates and her teacher, Annette Rudd. The book, a children’s version of a biography about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, suddenly became a social studies lesson for the day. According to Lily, “It was National Women’s Day and I wanted to share it with the class.” After reading Lily’s book to her class, Annette took this teachable moment and shared it with her fellow kindergarten teacher, Larry Elder. They led conversations with both of their classes about the Supreme Court, the racial makeup of the Court, the gender makeup of the Court, and how both have changed over time. They also discussed how this important topic relates to our school’s focus on DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging). Students made powerful connections to what they had learned during Black History Month and Women’s History Month. To hear the questions the students posed and to see how interested they were in these topics demonstrates a true love of learning, something that we all value in the St. Francis School community.  Student voice and interest guides what happens every day in the Lower School. As a Progressive school, we believe in cultivating classrooms where discussion and questioning thrive, learning is active and experiential, and students take ownership of their education. Not only was Lily’s book a catalyst for an [...]

High School Science Olympiad Competes at State

It was an untraditional year with the official Science Olympiad Regional Competition canceled and a Regional Invitation put on in its stead; thus anyone was eligible to participate in the State Competition. Several students participated in the invitational, and then 10th graders Elliott Loewy and AJ Stevenson competed at State. Elliott participated in Bridges, where students design and construct a bridge within certain parameters and then see how much weight/mass it can hold. The score is based on the ratio of bridge mass to mass held. AJ built a vehicle and ramp, which had their own parameters, for an event called Gravity Vehicle. He released his vehicle from a certain height on a ramp and attempted to have the vehicle stop as close as possible to a designated spot. Elliott placed 12th in Bridges and AJ placed 3rd in Gravity Vehicle. AJ also took an astronomy test and earned 17th place. Nice work, Wyverns!
